Any Answers (Radio 4 Sat pm) hosted by Anita Anand is a phone-in programme which invites listeners to respond to subjects raised earlier on Any Questions; the latter, an hour long programme hosted by Jonathan Dimbleby with a `panel` of guests - politicians, business people, professionals etc.
Any Answers, with Anita Anand, covered just one subject today - the case of terminally ill baby Charlie Gard. His parents want to take him to the U S for experimental treatment, while the courts here have ruled that Charlie should not be given treatment and that Great Ormond Street Hospital should be allowed to withdraw Charlie`s life support.
I didn`t hear any of Any Questions but I did listen to the whole of Any Answers and found it a deeply moving experience. From the very 1st caller who talked about her son Luke, to Penny`s call at the very end of the programme! What an emotional roller-coaster! And so well handled by Anita Anand - the programme over-running its allotted time of 30 minutes.
More time please BBC! Make Any Answers a one hour programme. 30 minutes is too short a time. You give the politicians an hour, so why not give the listener, an hour too?
I agree that a well managed phone-in can successfully counterbalance the pat responses on Any Questions given by a panel of politicians, commentators and self-promoting lobbyists.
I thought the most telling point about the Charlie Gard case was made some time ago by the former head of a medical ethics committee who questioned why the judge had imposed an order forbidding any other organisation to offer treatment to the child. Why the American doctor could not have visited GOH weeks ago has puzzled me.
Twenty long months since I wrote that last post - and finally, BBC got the message (thanks all for your contributions, not); at last, an hour long programme! One other question BBC - why did it take so long to make Any Answers an hour long, given that people have been arguing over Brexit for nigh on three years!
Anyone care to comment?
PS. please don`t revert back to a half hour once Brexit is over and done with! Let the people speak!
